People have a strong impression when they face the changing scenery in an instant or the bastard size architecture from the train window. Because there are many people walking at different speed in this shopping street under the platforms, I set “Transformation” as a design theme in order to leave the strong impression to passersby. Extending magazine shelves and louvers as a straight line let you to feel a scale. An instant change between wood-tone-finishing areas and white-finishing areas. A contrast between fluorescent lights, ones are set in order and the others are randomly. Mirror ceilings make people to forget about low ceilings of the whole shopping street. The owner of the store chose to prioritize taking care of customers over preventing shoplifting from our suggestions of traffic line. Mirrors can also contribute to preventing shoplifting.

These are showroom and salon for a dog care and goods. In the ground floor level where the showroom is situated, visitors can see, and touch goods with a help from the showroom staffs. They can purchase those goods through a computer available at the showroom or place an order directly to the manufacturer from their home PC. The ground floor staffs help customers by giving advice or recommending vets. The salon upstairs is used for organizing a program of conferences or workshops.

The finishing materials for both levels are selected from a catalog of the sponsor company dealing in a range of finishing material developed especially for a home with pet dogs. The color palette features pure white on one side to show up the colorful pet goods, and wine red on the other side to match the image color of the free paper on dogs published by the client.

As an eye-catcher for the passer bys, a big FRP dog tail equipped with a sensor system is set on the facade and it starts wagging every time someone passes by. The graphical design on the ceiling and lighting fixtures on the second floor resembles a dog’s head, which would lead the attention of the customers onto
the upper floor.

BLANCO SPA

This hermitage like day spa is situated in a back street of one of the most fashionable districts of Tokyo. The spa functions like a laboratory for health and beauty.

On the ground level, there are a reception, a waiting space and a consultant room as facilities for pre-treatment, and a lounge to be used after the treatment. In the basement, there are a changing room, Jet-pool, two bedrock-bathing rooms and a soft pack room.

A treatment course starts with a stretching aqua exercise in the pool with a wide view of the backyard garden. The same client can enjoy the view of the same garden again from the first floor lounge while relaxing with a cup of herb tea. The view this time has a wavy look created by the falling water along the big glass screen that produces soothing sound of water.

A special attention is given to the design of the ceiling as a client will stay lying down while receiving treatments: indirect lighting and a curve line reminiscent of body lines creating a soft ambiance. The same curved lines is used in the indirect lighting ceiling of the lounge, but in a mirrored finishing to solve the problem of the limited ceiling height, and to double the image of water, garden and healing video shown on the TV Screen.

Gomitori

This long-established restaurant specialized in Nagoya Kochin chicken decided to locate his first Tokyo branch restaurant in Shimbashi district, famed for its concentration of Yakitori, the grilled chicken traditional Japanese restaurant. In order to distinguish itself from many competitors nearby, the client asked for an arty and modern design.

The ground floor features a bar, the first floor has table seatings, the second a Japanese style floor seatings, and kitchen is situated at the top floor.

Vertical lines are used in the first floor in relation to its European style of seatings, while horizontal lines are used in the second floor in relation to its Japanese style. Both lines are randomly applied in the staircase that connect the two floors. And the facade and the bar ceiling are connected in design by the use of the same aluminum louvers.

Also, reduced lighting giving blurred reflection against aluminium and anodized metal lines, transparency through Japanese traditional hanged screens(sudare), and red and black color scheme evokes an appealing glamour for young ladies while a traditional yakitori-shop would attract only male businessmen.

A 4 meter ceiling high space located on a fashion area street of Tokyo was to be transformed into a hair salon. In addition to the usual zone items for such salon like a reception, shampoo area, etc., a machine room to produce high-tech water, an office for a fashion advertisement produce company and a booth for celebrities and/or customer with a dog a disabilities were to be included in the project. The plan was organized in such a way that it allows a separate and direct access to that special booth.

The client requested that the interior was as neutral as possible to allow a use of the salon as a photo studio or as a space for events such as a mini fashion-show. To create a cozy atmosphere in each different zone, big white walls are set up, which can also be used as a backdrop for a shooting session. As a counter element to the absence of color, flower pots are attached to the upper balconies making use of the height of the ceiling. Flower pots are easy to maintain and a florist will change the pots regularly to bring in seasonal natural colors into the interior.

This shop is the first shop of a 100 years old French wooden toy company in Japan as well as the very first one in the world. It being the debut of the shop, I have treated it like a visiting card (“meishi” in Japanese) you exchange when you meet a person for the first time in Japan, a very Japanese tradition. The 5 letters of the corporate name are used in the designs of its indirect light device and its furniture including the cash counter.

The main finishing material of the furniture is beech wood, which is the wood used for the manufacturing of its toy products, and mirror stainless steel is used to reflect the joyful colors of the toys. The only colors used for the walls are green and yellow taken from the cooperate color.

The final layout of furniture and fixtures is intentionally made random to look like a children’s room after they had put their toy-box upside down.

Tenshodo

Located between the Imperial Palace and the Kabuki Theater, Ginza used to be a place of mansions. Established in 1879, TENSHODO was very aware of the importance of its respectable brand image. And they wanted to lift up its look to attract a new generation, especially the generation of young women.

So the challenge was to find a good equilibrium between tradition and modernity: to create a long lasting look in its interior and facade, which also communicates a soft and light image at the same time.

To meet such challenge, a relative minimalism was used as its interior vocabulary: a mixture of curves and straight lines with a use of a neutral color range.
This new interior was executed more than 10 years ago and it was the third renovation for the Ginza shop. Since then many major international fashion brands like GUCCI, ARMANI, etc. built their Tokyo flagships next to TENSHODO, but I believe it is still standing healthy and attractive against flooding assaults of mega brands.

Rec Earth CG Studio

The interior design for a computer graphic studio is conceived from the client’s wish that his work ambience should not look “serious”, but “a funky and junky and intelligent space” to quote his words.

The studio being a creative space devoted to computers, I imagined an environment where every facilities in the room including furniture has a mind of its own, moving organically, and may even start to work by itself without the presence of human being.

The image I had was not that of a nightmarish machine dominated space created by the progress of computer technology, but the space that provokes new ideas, new associations, and new energy to us humans through the organic presence of computers and facilities: A space where you can think innovative with a good feeling.
